Walking Through a Thousand Years of History – Our Day in York with Richard Felix
Some cities tell stories. York lives them.
Our day began as we journeyed north through the beautiful English countryside towards one of Britain's most extraordinary historic cities. Waiting to welcome us was the wonderfully charismatic historian Richard Felix, whose knowledge, humour and passion transformed every street into a living history lesson.
From the moment we entered York, it became clear why it has captivated visitors for centuries.
We wandered through the famous Shambles, often regarded as one of Europe's best-preserved medieval streets. Leaning timber-framed buildings, tiny shopfronts and narrow cobbled lanes create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Britain. It truly feels as though you've stepped directly into another century.
Richard brought the street vividly to life with tales of medieval merchants, ghostly legends and fascinating local characters, sharing stories that simply cannot be found in guidebooks.
From there we made our way to the magnificent York Minster. Words hardly do justice to its scale.
Towering Gothic architecture, stunning stained-glass windows and centuries of craftsmanship combine to create one of Europe's most breathtaking cathedrals. Standing beneath its soaring vaulted ceilings, listening to Richard explain the building's remarkable history, was a genuinely moving experience.
The afternoon allowed time to discover York's many independent shops, charming cafés, hidden alleyways and elegant Georgian streets. Around every corner there seemed to be another fascinating story waiting to be uncovered.
As always, our day concluded back at our private accommodation, where our chef welcomed us with another beautifully prepared dinner accompanied by carefully selected wines. Conversation naturally turned to everything we had seen - from Roman York and Viking invasions to medieval merchants and royal intrigue.
York is far more than a beautiful city. Experienced alongside Richard Felix, it becomes an unforgettable journey through nearly two thousand years of English history.
